There are plenty of Fort Lauderdale readers who like Katy Perry. Even if you won't admit it, there's a chance you sing along to one of her hits, like "California Gurls" or "Firework," when you're in the car.
As you probably already know, Perry and her husband, British comedian Russell Brand, are divorcing. Although this is the kind of story you read about in supermarket tabloids, there are actually several things to learn from their story. One takeaway lesson is the importance of a prenuptial agreement.
Supposedly, Perry and Brand did not sign a prenuptial agreement before they wed in October 2010. At the time, they were both at roughly the same level of celebrity. Since then, though, Perry's career has really taken off and Brand's has not. With her latest record, "Teenage Dream," Perry has tied Michael Jackson for the most number one hits off a single album. Brand, meanwhile, saw his last movie, "Arthur," wither at the box office.
Perry is said to have earned $45 million since marrying Brand, while he is reported to have earned far less, somewhere in the neighborhood of $6 to $8 million. If California laws apply to their marriage (there is some dispute, because the two married in India), them Brand could be entitled to half of what Perry earned during the 14 months they were married.
So, the lesson to be learned here is that even if a prenuptial agreement does not seem worth it at the time you marry, it could prove to be a very wise move not far in the future. Having a discussion with an attorney who regularly handles these sorts of agreements might highlight more benefits of a prenuptial agreement.
